A Connecticut man has died following a snorkeling incident in Hawaii last week.

Police responded to Kona Community Hospital on Friday shortly after 1:30 p.m. on the report of a possible drowning and found that the victim had been snorkeling along with a family member in South Kona, according to the Hawai’i Police Department.

Police said the victim, identified as 62-year-old Bryan Coppola of Bethlehem, Connecticut, was pronounced dead at the hospital. According to police, he was visiting the island.

Police said Coppola was snorkeling at Ho‘okena Beach Park when he showed signs of distress. He was unresponsive when brought to shore and was given CPR until medics arrived, according to police. Medics continued CPR on the way to the hospital, according to police.

“At this time, no foul play is suspected and the investigation remains ongoing,” the police department said in a statement.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the department’s non-emergency line at 808-935-3311 or email Kona Patrol Officer Cody Sheddy at [email protected].
