Louis Martin Obituary – Louis Lawrence Martin, D.V.M., age 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 31, 2024, in Carencro, surrounded by his family in the house that he was born in. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Carencro. It is scheduled to take place on Saturday.
The funeral and burial will take place in the St. Peter Catholic Cemetery in Carencro. During the proceedings, the Reverend Bill Melancon, who serves as the pastor of St. Rita Catholic Church in Catahoula, will preside over the ceremony. Charlotte Jagneaux and Phyllis Simar will be the ones handling the musical selections for the event. For sixty years, Dr. Martin worked as a veterinarian, principally in the capacities of Mixed Animal Practitioner and Food Animal Inspector when he was in practice.
After completing his high school education at Carencro High School, from which he graduated in 1954, he went on to study Pre-Vet at Southwestern Louisiana Institute, which is now established as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. There was no veterinary school in Louisiana at this time period; Dr. Martin was one of three applicants from Louisiana who were accepted to Texas A&M University for the class of 1960. He was pleased of his accomplishment.
After receiving his diploma, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and proudly served his country as a Public Health and Preventative Medical Officer for all military stations in Northern Nevada and Northern California. He held the rank of Captain during his time in the military. Stead Air Force Base in Reno, Nevada, Fallon Naval Air Station in Bridgeport, California, the Marine Corps Cold Weather Training Center in Herlong, California, and the Army Ammunition Depot in Hawthorne, Nevada were some of the places he served throughout his time in the military.
After that, he became a member of the Carencro War Veterans, where he held the position of Commander for a period of two years. The fact that he served in the military was something that he and his family were always proud of. A devout Catholic, Dr. Martin was the President of the society for thirty years and served as an Usher at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church. He was also a prominent member of the church. St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council #6958, and the Holy Name and Bonne Mort Societies were all organizations that he was a member of. He was also a Charter Member of the organization.
A “die-hard” Aggie whose “spirit can never be told,” he was a member of the Lafayette Chapter of the Texas A&M Association of Former Students. He was a member of the university’s alumni association. Additionally, he was a member of the Louisiana Cattlemen’s Association, where he held the position of President and was honored with the title of “Cattlemen of the Year” in the year 1990. In his professional life, Dr. Martin was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association (LVMA), and the Lafayette area Veterinary Association.
Additionally, he was a member of the LVMA Liaison Committee to the Louisiana Agriculture Commissioner. Aside from writing a book with the title “Fix My Dog, Doc,” he also contributed to the publication of articles in the National Magazine-DVM and Veterinary Economics. Académie Acadie was a call-in show that taught Cajun French as it was broadcast on AOC. He was a true Cajun and hosted the show with his pals. In his younger years, he was a member of the American Legion and Carencro High School baseball teams, and he coached the CAYSI Little League for a period of 10 years. He was a huge fan of all sports, but baseball was his favorite.
He was a jokester, and his dry humor won him a large number of friends. Dr. Martin was a jokester. Whenever he encountered a new person, he always managed to make them laugh. His comments carried weight because of his intelligence and awareness of the world around him; his handshake meant more than any written contract could ever hope to. His words were soft-spoken, but they carried weight. Helping other people was his life’s mission, and he took pleasure in every moment of it.
According to his request, you should not be saddened by his dying but rather celebrate his life and the experiences you have shared with him over the years. He held each and every one of you in the highest regard, and he is grateful for all of the contributions you made over his long life. Survivors include two sons, Louis “Lou” Martin, II and Danny T. Jill “Mimi” Martin, his wife of sixty-one years, his daughter Mary Deanne Jenkins, and his parents, Louis Raoul Martin and the former Adrienne Broussard, all passed away before him. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. It is requested by the family that visiting hours be observed on Friday from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., and that these hours will continue on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until the time of the service. During his final days, the family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Mike Mounir and the team at Bridgeway Hospice for the care and support they provided.
