Joseph “Joey” Barksdale, Sr. Obituary, Death – Joseph “Joey” Robert Barksdale, Sr. died away quietly at home on Sunday, March 31, 2024, surrounded by his devoted family. It is appropriate that he left on Easter Sunday to be with the Lord. Joey worked for Lift One as an account manager and material handling consultant. She was pleased to be from Augusta, Georgia. In addition, he attended Wesley United Methodist Church regularly. After graduating from Westside High School in 1991, Joey pursued a passion for baseball and succeeded in it.
Due to his talent, he attended Southern Union in Wadley, Alabama, and from 1993 to 1996, he had a memorable career playing for the Boston Red Sox. Beyond sports, Joey was a great student of history; she frequently paraphrased quotes from “The Godfather,” Pearl Jam, and the Eagles, as well as the counsel of past presidents. Cheering for UGA football and the yearly excitement of the Masters Tournament brought him joy. He loved taking trips, whether they were to the mountains or the beach.
Joey bravely accepted a colon/rectal cancer diagnosis in April 2023. He faced every day of his fight with fortitude and bravery, influencing many people with his exuberance and infectious nature. Those of us who had the honor of knowing Joey will truly miss him. His family would like to express their gratitude to the Emory Hospital’s seventh floor nurses for their kind and encouraging care.
His mother, Marie Bonnett Barksdale, his brothers, Will Barksdale IV (Deanie) and John Barksdale (Samantha), his sister, Connie Miller (Carey), his wife of more than 25 years, Allison Becton Barksdale; his children, Joseph R. Barksdale, Jr. and Caroline L. Barksdale; his nieces and nephews, Beth Barksdale Abbott, Kay Barksdale, Will Barksdale V, Viola Claire Barksdale, Asher Barksdale, Will Rogers, Paige Rogers Arrington, Parks Ellison, Anna Grace Ellison Bates, and Miles Ellison; and by great nieces and nephews and extended family members remain to cherish his memory.
He had a unique relationship with his niece Kay, and she will undoubtedly find ways to remember him on future family visits. William Iverson Barksdale III, his father, passed away before him. Rev. Greg Porterfield will preside over a memorial ceremony honoring Joey’s life at Wesley United Methodist Church on Thursday, April 4, 2024, at 2:00 PM. On Wednesday, April 3, 2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., family and friends are welcome to attend the visitation at the funeral home. The following people will serve as honorary pallbearers: Ted Pintar, John Turner, Brad Foster, Doug Coleman, Bert Durand, and Scott Allen.
