A homeowner in West Hartford was able to help salvage their house using a fire extinguisher during an early morning fire.

Crews responded to the report of a fire at a home on Rockledge Drive when they received a 911 call at 3:08 a.m. Tuesday, according to Dep. Chief Russell Duffy of the West Hartford Fire Department.

Duffy said the caller reported an exterior fire on the side of the home. Three residents were able to safely evacuate before firefighters arrived.

One of the residents used a fire extinguisher to put out most of the flames on their own, according to Duffy. Firefighters then completely put out the fire and searched the residence to ensure there was no extension into the home.

Crews also vented the house and checked the air quality inside, Duffy said.

No injuries were reported.

The residents were expected to be able to return to the home after an electrician conducted an inspection to confirm it was safe to do so, according to Duffy.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. It does not appear suspicious, Duffy said.

Duffy said the blaze followed a chimney fire earlier in the night at 64 Lexington Drive. That fire was contained to the chimney with no extension into the residence, according to Duffy.

The residents were able to remain in their home.

“As colder weather approaches, the West Hartford Fire Department reminds residents to ensure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are installed and functioning properly,” Duffy said in a statement. “Residents who use fireplaces or wood-burning stoves are also encouraged to have their chimneys and heating appliances inspected and cleaned annually to help prevent fires.”
