Nearly 500 children will be receiving toys later today, according to the Town of Vernon.

“Toy distribution begins at 6 p.m. at Vernon’s Nye Street fire station, 15 Nye St,” according to a statement. “Firefighters will visit the homes of each family to drop off toys between 6 and 8:30 p.m.”

“Last year Vernon firefighters provided toys to about 250 kids, but saw a 100 percent increase in demand this year,” the town of Vernon spokesman said. “That prompted concerns about whether there would be enough toys to meet the demand.”

Thankfully, town residents stepped up to provide enough toys and cash donations this year, according to the town of Vernon.

Need for toys up 100% in CT, firefighters say. They hope more people will donate

“We’re going to have a great night Monday,” Toys for Tikes Coordinator Diane Carpenter said. “The kids are going to be thrilled. We couldn’t do it without the community’s support.”
