Finance students at Quinnipiac University have increased the value of a student-managed portfolio by a whopping $1.3 million during the fall semester, officials said.

Quinnipiac’s School of Business’s student-managed portfolio has grown to more than $6.1 million as of last month — an increase of approximately $1.3 million, according to the school. The portfolio is a real-world investment within the School of Business’s applied portfolio management course. School officials said the portfolio also makes up part of the Quinnipiac University endowment fund.

The student-managed portfolio began in 2002 with an initial $25,000 investment, school officials said. Since then, the portfolio has expanded through market returns, dividends, additional endowment allocations and donations.

“Undergraduate finance majors assume full responsibility for managing actual funds, including developing investment strategies, monitoring and rebalancing holdings, and reporting performance. Students work under the guidance of Professor of Finance and portfolio founder Matthew O’Connor and School of Business alumnus Ted Koly,” Quinnipiac University said in a statement.

The fall 2025 portfolio performance was recently presented to university leadership — including Quinnipiac President Marie Hardin and School of Business Dean Holly Raider — trustees, advisory board members, faculty, alumni and students.

“The portfolio’s growth reflects the dedication and expertise of successive student cohorts and long-term support from the Quinnipiac community,” according to Quinnipiac University.

“As of November 30, the value fund stood at $5.3 million and the growth fund at $775,000. Between December 2024 and November 2025, the value fund returned 21.64%, outperforming the S&P 500 over the same period, while the growth fund delivered a 40.67% return compared with the Russell 1000 Growth benchmark.”
