Death: William Delahunt Obituary – According to the announcement made by his family, longtime United States Representative William D. Delahunt of Massachusetts, a loyal member of the Democratic Party who delayed his own retirement from Washington in order to assist in the promotion of former President Barack Obama’s legislative agenda, has passed away after a protracted illness.
The death of Delahunt occurred on Saturday at his residence in Quincy, Massachusetts, at the age of 82, according to accounts from the media. Between the years 1997 and 2011, Delahunt represented the 10th congressional district of Massachusetts in the United States House of Representatives. He served for a total of fourteen years. Before that, he was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1973 until 1975. From 1975 until 1996, he also served as the district attorney.
According to accounts in the media, the Delahunt family issued a statement on Saturday acknowledging that he had died away “peacefully,” but they did not reveal the particular cause of his death. When the statement was released, it read, “While we mourn the loss of such a tremendous person, we also celebrate his remarkable life and his legacy of dedication, service, and inspiration.
” Without him, our family and our hearts are left with a huge emptiness. He was someone we could always turn to for advice, comfort, and a good laugh. During the month of January 2011, Delahunt resigned from his position in the United States House! Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, a fellow senior senator from the Bay State, persuaded him that he was required to assist in the passage of Obama’s legislative proposals at the time.
He stated to The Boston Globe that he had previously pondered retiring. The Patriot Ledger, the daily that is published in Quincy, which is Delahunt’s hometown, reported that Delahunt was an early supporter of Barack Obama. He was the first member of the Massachusetts congressional delegation to endorse the presidential quest of the Illinois senator.
“The death of Kennedy the previous year turned his thoughts to finding time for priorities beyond Washington,” Delahunt stated when he announced his resignation in March of 2010. According to Delahunt, “It became abundantly clear that I desired to spend my time, the time that I have left, with my family, with my friends, and with the people that I love;”
