On November 23, 1923, in Dougherty, Iowa, James Hogan and Mary (Conners) Hogan became parents for the first time. They welcomed their daughter Gladys into the world. St. Patrick’s High School, which was situated in Dougherty, was the institution from which Gladys graduated with her diploma in the year 1941. Immediately following that, she found employment as a maid at the Mercy Medical Center in Rockford. In addition to that, she worked for the RRMR School District for a total of twenty-two years as a school bus driver for that organization.
During a dance, Gladys would meet Eugene Pfertzel, the man who would eventually become the love of her life. This would take place before he left to serve in the Marine Corps overseas. The wedding would take place on November 12, 1946 in Dougherty, Iowa, upon the couple’s return from his service overseas. This union resulted in the birth of two children: Bonnie Scurry and Richard Pfertzel.
Both of these children are the product of this union. Taking care of her flowers, baking snacks, painting, and spending time with her family were some of the things that she found herself doing. On numerous occasions, she was seen engaging in these activities.
Those who are left to treasure the memories of Gladys are her children Bonnie Scurry and Richard (Diane) Pfertzel; her granddaughters Jena Scurry, Logan Pfertzel, Ellie Carlson, and Alona Pfertzel; and her great-grandchildren Emilie Carlson, Skylar Pfertzel, and Remington Pfertzel. Gladys passed away on April 15, 2019.
Her parents, James and Mary Hogan, her sister Lillian Anderegg, her sister Dorothy Foley, and her sister Doris Ewen, her brother Donald Hogan, and her son-in-law Henry Scurry all passed away before her. Her husband, Eugene Pfertzel, was also among those who passed away before her.
