An alleged Waterbury drug trafficker received a five-year federal prison sentenced Tuesday for carrying a firearm.

Malik Wright, 22, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Victor A. Bolden in New Haven to 60 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut. Wright pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime on Aug. 6.

Court records show, in July and August 2024, investigators from the Waterbury Police Department allegedly made a controlled purchase of narcotics from Wright and “observed him conducting additional hand-to-hand drug sales.”

On Aug. 29, 2024, investigators allegedly saw Wright stash a satchel in the tire area of an abandoned car in a vacant lot near Coe Street and High Street before conducting another drug sale, according to court records.

“Officers took Wright into custody and located the satchel, which contained fentanyl and cocaine, a scale, and a loaded .40 caliber handgun with a 23-round magazine,” court records show.

Wright has been detained since his arrest, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Waterbury Police Department and the Connecticut State Police, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
