A Connecticut man previously convicted of failing to pay more than $4.8 million in federal income taxes has been sentenced to additional prison time for failing to pay restitution while spending more than $100,000 on lavish restaurants. shopping sprees and UConn basketball games.

David Adams, 65, of Old Saybrook faced sentencing on Monday in federal court in New Haven where U.S. District Judge Victor A. Bolden handed down a nine-month prison term for violating the conditions of his supervised release, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut.

Adams was previously sentenced to 90 months in prison and three years of supervised release in November 2018, federal officials said. That conviction stemmed from accusations of failing to pay more than $4.8 million in federal income taxes over more than 20 years, authorities said.

According to officials, Adams was released from prison in April 2024. While serving his supervised release, Adams allegedly failed to pay restitution as ordered and did not disclose to the U.S. Probation Office his access to a bank account that he used, authorities said.

Officials allege he used the account to spend more than $100,000 attending UConn basketball games and other live sporting events. Authorities said he also ate at “expensive restaurants,” went on shopping sprees and provided money to a friend.

According to authorities, Adams’ supervised release has been revoked and will not be served once he is released from prison. He is scheduled to report to prison to begin serving his sentence on Jan. 12, 2026.

Officials said Adams’ previous criminal history includes two additional federal convictions. In 1986, he was convicted of credit card fraud for submitting more than $588,000 in fraudulent credit card sales drafts through his floral business over a three-month period in 1985.  In 1992, he was convicted of failing to file tax returns between the 1984 and 1986 tax years.
