GASTON COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — An elderly woman died in a house fire in Gaston County Sunday evening, officials say.
Emergency crews were called to the 800 block of Alexis High Shoals Road shortly after 7 p.m. By the time fire responders arrived, more than 75 percent of the home was engulfed in flames.

The fire was brought under control by 7:30 p.m.
One person was found outside the home with minor injuries sustained from trying to rescue their family member, an 82-year-old woman. That person was treated for their injuries on the scene.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Gaston County Office of Emergency Management and Fire Service says the fire started in the living room, likely from combustible items located near a space heater.
