75-Year-Old John Force Hypervigilant Following Fiery, 300-MPH Crash At Virginia Nationals: John Force, the legendary NHRA driver, was alert and talking to safety workers immediately following a fiery 300-mph crash during the Virginia Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park on Sunday. The 75-year-old Force was examined at the track by the NHRA Medical Team before being transported by medical helicopter to a facility for further evaluation. The incident occurred during the first round of Funny Car eliminations when Force’s car engine exploded at the finish line.
The vehicle crossed the centerline, struck the left concrete guard wall, and then careened back across into the right wall. Despite the severity of the crash, Force’s quick communication with safety workers indicated his resilience and presence of mind. Force, a 16-time NHRA Funny Car champion, is no stranger to dramatic crashes. Just three weeks ago in New Hampshire, he celebrated his record 157th NHRA victory and second win of the season. His racing career has been marked by numerous victories and close calls, including a serious crash in Ennis, Texas, in 2007 at the age of 58.
Tony Stewart, the former NASCAR star who now races in NHRA’s Top Fuel class, expressed his support for Force on social media, saying, “We’re keeping our pal John Force in our thoughts and prayers. He’s one tough cookie.” The racing community rallied behind Force following the crash. Despite the unsettling incident, the event continued, and Force’s teammate, Austin Prock, went on to win the Funny Car division by defeating Bob Tasca III in the final round.
Prock dedicated his victory to Force, saying from the winners’ circle, “(The trophy) is going straight to the hospital to John Force. It’s just tough to see somebody go through that, especially when it’s somebody you really care about, but I know he’ll be back. We’re race car drivers and we have to flip the switch. I know John wanted us to be out here, going rounds and I’m glad we did our job.” John Force Racing has not provided further updates on Force’s condition, but the racing world remains hopeful for his swift recovery. Force’s indomitable spirit and determination have defined his career, and his latest challenge only underscores his legendary status in the sport.
