More than 40 gunshots were fired during a shootout that resulted in one fatality on Wednesday night.
Authorities identified the victim as 22-year-old Demarious Antwon Cherry of Birmingham, who was killed in what police suspect was an exchange of gunfire in the Kingston community.
Officers first became aware of the incident around 9:40 p.m. when they heard multiple gunshots in the area. At the same time, ShotSpotter technology alerted them to gunfire in the 4600 block of Roscoe Avenue.
Upon arrival, police found Cherry unresponsive in a grassy field. Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded to the scene and pronounced him dead.
Authorities described the situation as a “possible shootout,” noting that gunfire appeared to have come from multiple weapons and various locations. Officers arriving at the scene encountered chaos as the situation unfolded.
Using ShotSpotter data, investigators were able to track the origin of the gunfire and detained several individuals for questioning.
At this time, the motive behind the shootout remains unclear. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Birmingham Police Department or CrimeStoppers.
This is an ongoing investigation, and updates will be provided as more details emerge.
