Matthew Wurnig, a social media influencer best known for his viral “50 Dates 50 States” dating series, has been charged with DWI following an arrest early Saturday, March 21, in Crow Wing County, Minnesota, about 140 miles outside of Minneapolis. Wurnig, 29, was taken into custody at approximately 3:30 a.m. and faces charges of refusing to submit to a chemical test and a second-degree DWI.
Wurnig, who gained significant popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic with his unique dating series on TikTok, did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment. Jail records show that he was arrested after law enforcement officers requested that he take a breathalyzer or blood test, which he reportedly refused.
Best known for his “50 Dates 50 States” series, Wurnig’s rise to fame began in 2020, when he started virtual dating with women from each U.S. state. After in-person meetings became possible, he traveled across the country to meet the women, garnering millions of views and creating additional seasons of the series. His popularity continued to grow, with a live finale on Good Morning America, and he even gifted a cruise to the Bahamas to the winner of the most recent season.
Season 4 of “50 Dates 50 States” is set to debut later this year, with a new twist—Wurnig will accompany a new star, Ray from Louisiana, on a road trip across the country to meet potential suitors.
Despite his fame, Wurnig now faces serious legal issues. TMZ reports that no bail has been set, and he remains in custody at Crow Wing County Jail. The court records indicate that Wurnig will likely face further legal proceedings in connection with his charges.
