MONROVIA, Ind. — A tragic incident in Monrovia has left a husband and wife dead in what authorities believe to be a murder-suicide. The Morgan County Sheriff’s Department responded to a distress call on the afternoon of Friday, February 23, 2026, around 2:30 p.m., at a residence on North Sashing Way.
Upon arrival, deputies discovered a man and a woman deceased inside the home. Sheriff Rich Meyers reported that a 911 caller had stated they received a disturbing admission from someone inside the home, who allegedly confessed to shooting and killing his wife. At the time of the shooting, a 4-year-old girl was also in the house, though she was unharmed. A second child was at school.
Authorities soon heard another gunshot from inside the home, prompting them to search further. They found the deceased couple in another part of the house.
The young girl was safely transported to St. Francis Hospital in Mooresville for observation and later reunited with her 9-year-old sister, who had been at school. The Indiana Department of Child Services has taken custody of the children to ensure they receive appropriate care and support during this traumatic time.
Sheriff Meyers shared his concern about the situation, urging others to find peaceful solutions in times of conflict. “It’s a terrible situation. What we always try to tell people… if you have any fights, find a peaceful resolution. Reach out to someone you know, someone you trust,” he said.
The sheriff’s department has yet to release the names of the deceased as they work to notify next of kin. The investigation remains in the early stages, with authorities noting they have not found any prior domestic incidents involving the couple.
As the community grapples with the shock of the event, the focus now shifts to the wellbeing of the children left behind, who will undoubtedly carry the weight of this tragedy.
