Former actor John Alford, known for his roles in London’s Burning and Grange Hill, has died in prison at the age of 54. Alford, whose real name was John Shannon, passed away at HMP Bure in Norfolk on March 13, 2026, just months after being sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison for the sexual assault of two teenage girls.

Alford was convicted in January 2026 for the assaults, which took place during a party at a friend’s house in Hertfordshire on April 9, 2022. He was found guilty of four counts of sexual activity with a 14-year-old girl, as well as charges of sexual assault and assault by penetration involving a 15-year-old girl. The court heard that Alford had assaulted the girls while they were intoxicated after a night out at a pub.

A Prison Service spokesperson confirmed his death, stating that, as is standard with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman would be conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Alford’s passing.

Alford’s death comes amid the aftermath of a high-profile trial that shook his fans and the public. He had been a well-known figure in British television in the late 20th century, but his later years were marked by controversy and legal issues. His passing has left many with mixed emotions, as they reflect on both his past fame and the severity of his criminal conviction.
