State police apprehended a man who allegedly fled from police in New London on Tuesday following the report of someone showing a gun during an argument.

Clayton Cyr, 23, of Waterford was taken into custody after troopers used stop sticks to disable the Ford Fusion he was driving on Interstate 395, according to Connecticut State Police.

The argument allegedly involving a man with a firearm was reported in the area of 242 Nautilus Drive at 8:50 p.m., Brian M. Wright, chief of the New London Police Department, said in a news release. As officers approached the scene, a man fled the area in a Ford with others in the vehicle, Wright said.

Police tried to stop the Ford and went after the vehicle briefly before terminating the pursuit, according to Wright. Officers alerted law enforcement in the region of the incident and gave a description of the vehicle.

Troopers then spotted the Ford on I-395 North as it passed the Troop E state police barracks in Montville, according to state police. State police said their agency was told that a “violent felon” had engaged New London officers in a pursuit following an incident involving a gun.

Troopers followed the Ford and later used stop sticks to disable it, state police said. The driver allegedly attempted to take off as troopers were trying to pull him over but was unable to get away because of the condition of the vehicle, according to state police.

State police said they conducted a felony stop and detained all the occupants of the vehicle after the driver, who was identified as Cyr, pulled over in the right shoulder. Cyr was arrested on charges of operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs, speeding and failure to drive in the proper lane. He was held on a $50,000 bond and was expected to appear in Norwich Superior Court on Wednesday.

According to Wright, police have not filed any charges in connection with the incident allegedly involving a firearm. That investigation remains active.

Wright asked anyone with information to contact New London police at 860-442-4444. Anonymous tips can be submitted to the New London Tips 411 system by texting “NLPDTip” along with the information to Tip411 (847411).

“The New London Police Department commends the Connecticut State Police for their swift response and professional assistance in this matter,” Wright said in a statement.
