Readers speak: Humanity’s future depends on restraint, common sense, and wisdom of leaders

The Hartford Courant ran an “analysis” entitled “Russians are a threat.” It may shock most Americans to hear the message that the world is coming to see American as the bully threat.

Donald Trump has radically changed America’s image world-wide. We are the bully. Trump is now the symbol, but the movement started in 1992, the year the Soviet Union disintegrated, Gone was the communist menace.

Panic set in throughout the Pentagon. Without the Red menace how can we justify our budgets? In stepped Department Director Wolfowitz and established the Wolfowitz doctrine which has run (and still runs) American policy. The aim of the doctrine is to maintain American hegemony. We must, says Wolfowitz, remain the sole dominant power in the world. To do this we must do all we can to keep China and Russia weak.

Let’s be real honest. At a time when communism ceased to be a world issues and both Russian and China were at their weakest, America re-ignited the “Cold War” attitude. Why? To give an excuse to maintain the military budget. Trump is heir not author of this policy. America should heed the warning of a philosopher. Long ago Don Passo wrote “Passionate conflicts evolve into an exchange of characters.” Or to put it more simply: “You become what you hate.”

The only reason to maintain an armed position stronger than all the rest of the world put together is to maintain American right to bully the world.

We cut food stamps and the “safety net” for poverty, so we can expand an already massive nuclear arsenal.

The time grows short for those of good will to assert “had enough – it’s time to grown along humanitarian and spiritual (Yes, I do mean spiritual) lines lest we become the species that failed it’s final exam.

The history of classic Athens shows us that a Democracy can misuse its power, become arrogant and become a tyrant. The very pride in their power can lead to their downfall. You know the cliché, “Those who ignore the lessons of history will be doomed to repeat them”

One more thought to keep you awake at night: Russia and the United States have together a nuclear arsenal millions of times more powerful than the bomb which fell on Hiroshima. The future of humanity depends on the restraint, common sense, and wisdom of the leaders, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. Donald and Vladimir have at their finger the ability to launch 10 thousand times as much nuclear poison in Earth’s atmosphere as was caused by Chernobyl. Don’t your children and grandchildren deserve better?
