A man fatally shot his wife and then himself in Plainfield on Tuesday night after calling 911 to tell dispatchers she had terminal cancer and he was going to kill her just before taking his own life, police said.
John Ezzell, 62, called authorities around 7 p.m. and told them he would leave the door unlocked at the couple’s home on Kate Downing Road for officers who responded to the shooting, according to the Plainfield Police Department.
Police said he told dispatchers that his wife, 62-year-old Christine Ezzell, was suffering from terminal cancer and that he intended to shoot her before turning the gun on himself. When officers arrived at the home they found the couple suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, according to police. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was expected to conduct an autopsy on both individuals.
The incident remains under investigation.
