A 17-year-old West Hartford high school student has died after he was caught in the crossfire of a shooting in Hartford earlier Sunday morning.

Officers were patrolling the area around Ann Uccello Street before 2 a.m. and heard gunfire, according to Lt. Aaron Boisvert of the Hartford Police Department.

Officers located an unresponsive 17-year-old male gunshot victim at 181 Ann Uccello St. near PeoplesBank Arena, police said. The teenager, later identified as Camden Siegel of West Hartford, was transported to an area hospital in “extremely” critical condition and was pronounced dead on Tuesday, Boisvert said.

Siegel’s family members previously told WFSB that he was a senior at William H. Hall High School in West Hartford and said he was with other students from the high school when he was shot in the crossfire.

On Sunday morning, West Hartford Superintendent of Schools Paul Vicinus sent a letter to the community about the tragedy.

“Earlier today, our community learned of a shooting in Hartford during which others were tragically caught in the crossfire,” Vicinus said in the letter on Sunday morning. “It is with a heavy heart that I report that a group of WHPS students are among those impacted and one student sustained serious injuries and is receiving medical care.

“An incident of this magnitude deeply impacts not only the school, but our entire town. When harm touches our young people, it touches all of us. Our hearts are with the student, the family, and everyone impacted by this senseless event. We ask that the family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time,” Vicinus said.

“In moments like this, the strength of a community is measured not only by its response, but by its care for one another. We will move forward together with empathy, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of our children,” he added.

While police were on the scene, a second gunshot victim, a man in his 20s, arrived at an area hospital via private vehicle. He was listed in critical, but stable condition, Boisvert said.

The Hartford Police Department’s Major Crimes and Crime Scene Divisions are investigating. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Hartford Police Department Tip Line at 860-722-TIPS (8477).
