A firefighter was taken to a hospital following a three-alarm house fire in Avon during blizzard conditions on Monday.
Crews responded to the home at 8 Quinns Court on the report of a structure fire just after 6:30 a.m. and found heavy fire conditions in a four-car garage, according to the Avon Volunteer Fire Department.
Firefighters confirmed all the occupants had made it out of the home safely and began working to put out the fire, which extended to the house along the roof line, fire officials said.
“This call came in during the height of the blizzard (on Monday) morning; extreme snow and wind conditions made fire suppression efforts very challenging,” Avon Fire Chief Bruce Appell said in a statement.
“Our crews worked swiftly to control the situation and ensure the safety of everyone involved,” said Appell, who also serves as the town’s fire marshal and emergency manager. “We appreciate the support of our neighboring departments from Farmington, Canton, Simsbury, UConn, Burlington, Plainville and New Hartford who assisted on scene and provided station coverage and incident response in town, as well as all emergency responders who assisted at the scene.”
According to fire officials, crews stayed on scene to monitor for hot spots once the fire was under control.
A firefighter was taken to a hospital for an evaluation, fire officials said. Their condition was not immediately clear.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s Office.
