Four sheep were killed in a barn fire on the University of Connecticut Storrs campus on Saturday night.

The University of Connecticut Fire Department was called to the barn on Horsebarn Hill around 8 p.m. The barn was heavily damaged from the fire. Outside of the four sheep, there were no other animal or people injuries reported from the fire or to emergency response crews, according to a UConn spokesperson.

“UConn’s sheep herds are used in the UConn Department of Animal Science’s teaching, research, and community extension programs. There typically are about 90 ewes in the livestock barns along with about 45 beef cows,” according to a UConn spokesperson.

Coventry’s and Mansfield’s fire departments provided mutual aid and representatives from UConn facilities operations, farm services, and the building inspector’s office also reported to the scene.

The origin and cause of the fire are under investigation by the UConn Fire Marshal’s Unit.
