Police have charged three juveniles in connection with a fatal shooting during a robbery gone wrong in Hamden last month.
The arrests were announced Friday during a news conference held at the Hamden Police Department.
Police said the juveniles face charges in connection with the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Keyvon Washington on Jan. 17. Officers found Washington unresponsive in a vehicle and suffering from gunshot injuries after responding to the area of 650 Mix Ave. on the report of gunshots and a possible gunshot victim just before 11:30 a.m.
Police performed life-saving efforts on Washington before he was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Detectives investigating the killing found that Washington was in the area to sell a vehicle. Once there, he was confronted by three individuals allegedly who tried to rob him, police said.
The altercation escalated into Washington being shot, according to police. Police that one of the individuals allegedly got into Washington’s vehicle and shot him. The other two at the scene allegedly fired gunshots at the vehicle before all three individuals fled the area.
Police said their investigation led to three juveniles being identified as suspects. Investigators obtained warrants charging each of them, according to police.
The charges tied to the warrants include those of felony murder, murder, attempted first-degree robbery and criminal possession of a firearm, according to police. Police did not release the ages of the juveniles or specify which charges each of them face.
“Gun violence in particular has no place in Hamden, and it will not be tolerated,” Mayor Adam Sendroff said at the news briefing. “We need to do better, collectively, to support our young people. We need to engage and promote opportunities for our youth in town.”
Police said the investigation remains ongoing. They did not release any additional details, citing the need to protect the integrity of the investigation.
