A man was arrested in South Windsor on Monday after police said they had to break the window of a vehicle he was in when he fell asleep behind the wheel while allegedly using narcotics.
The arrest came after officers responded to the area of Ellington Road and Buckland Road for a report of a man asleep at the wheel while stopped in the intersection, according to Lt. Mark Cleverdon of the South Windsor Police Department.
Cleverdon said police had to break the window to get to the driver, who was identified as 49-year-old Peter J. Santos of South Windsor. Santos eventually woke up before police allegedly found that he “had used and was in possession of narcotics,” according to Cleverdon, who did not say what kind of drugs were allegedly involved.
Santos allegedly failed field sobriety testing and was arrested at 9:15 p.m. He faces charges of driving under the influence and possession of a controlled substance.
Santos is free on a $5,000 non-surety bond and is scheduled to appear in Manchester Superior Court on Feb. 23.
