Two people and a firefighter were taken to a hospital following a fire at an apartment building in Derby on Sunday.

Fire crews responded to a structure fire at 23 Derby Ave. just after 6 a.m. where initial reports indicated flames were coming from the roof and multiple occupants were possibly trapped inside, according to the Derby Fire Department.

The first units on scene encountered heavy fire conditions and flames coming through the roof, fire officials said. Each occupants of the home had gotten out safely and was accounted for, according to fire officials.

Multiple nearby buildings were exposed to the fire, including one that was evacuated, fire officials said.

Frozen hydrants led to an initial delay in fighting the blaze, officials said. Crews fought the fire from outside the building after a tanker force responded to the scene.

Firefighters later established a water supply with mutual aid assistance. The fire was under control by about 10 a.m., with crews remaining at the scene for another five hours, officials said.

Two residents of the building were taken to hospitals with injuries not considered life-threatening, according to fire officials. A firefighter was also taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Multiple people were displaced following the fire. They are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Route 34 was closed to traffic for hours while crews were on scene. Power in the area was cut by United Illuminating while firefighters battled the blaze and was later restored.

Fire officials said some residents in the area likely experienced brown water and low pressure while fire hydrants were in use.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation by the Derby Fire Marshal’s Office.

Fire officials said mutual aid was provided by the Ansonia, Shelton, Seymour and Orange Fire Departments. The New Haven County Utility Task Force assisted with manpower, and the Tanker Task Force assisted with water supply operations.

“The Derby Fire Department extends its sincere thanks to all volunteer members, mutual aid departments, and task force personnel who operated under challenging conditions to bring this incident to a safe conclusion,” the fire department wrote in a statement.
