The Newington Ice Arena was evacuated on Saturday night due to high levels of carbon monoxide.

The Newington Fire Department announced on Facebook Saturday night the fire department and Connecticut Natural Gas “located a faulty rooftop HVAC unit and a Zamboni (ice resurfacing) machine that produced CO in the building,” according to the Newington Fire Department.

“We had an unfortunate incident tonight at our rink,” the Newington Ice Arena posted on it’s website.

“The issue has thankfully been fixed, and we are working closely with officials to determine exactly what caused this to happen. We are so grateful to the emergency response teams and Connecticut Natural Gas for the quick response. Officials have given us the all clear to safely reopen in the morning.”

“We extend our deepest apologies to our players, families and all in attendance tonight. We will provide further updates as needed. Thank you for your understanding,” the Saturday night message concluded.

A Newington Ice Arena employee confirmed that the arena was open on Sunday morning. A message from Newington Ice Arena management was not immediately returned.

The public was told avoid the area on Saturday night and mutual aid by the Newington Fire Department was requested to cover the rest of the town.

Newington Ice Arena is located at 300 Alumni Road in Newington.
