A Connecticut man who was arrested on assault charges following an alleged domestic violence incident in Wallingford was re-arrested 30 minutes after posting bond for violating the conditions of his release, police said.
Michael Barnes, 47, of Wallingford, was arrested on Jan. 30 after he was accused of assaulting an elderly victim, coercing the victim into providing him a check to cash so he could purchase drugs and fleeing the residence in the victim’s vehicle, according to the Wallingford Police Department.
As officers were investigating the incident, Barnes returned to the residence and was taken into custody without incident, police said. He was charged with third-degree assault on an elderly person, breach of peace, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance. He was initially held on a $30,000 surety bond, according to police.
On Jan. 31, Barnes’s bond was reduced to $7,500 by a bail commissioner. After posting bond, he was released from the custody of the Wallingford Police Department. “As a condition of his release, Barnes was ordered to have no contact with the victim and was prohibited from returning to the victim’s residence,” police said.
According to police, about 30 minutes after his release, Barnes allegedly contacted the victim by telephone and returned to their residence. Officers responded to the residence and re-arrested Barnes for violating the conditions of his release.
Following his arrest, his bond was set at $50,000, which he was unable to post, police said.
