In a ranking of all 50 states in the United States, Connecticut was not ranked the worst state to drive in, according to a report by WalletHub.

Connecticut roads sat in 22nd place when ranking states from best to worst. The best state to drive in was Vermont while the worst was Hawaii.

The report used statistics to rank cost of ownership of a car and maintenance, traffic and infrastructure, safety, and access to vehicles.

Traffic is “quite bad for your wallet – in fact, congestion cost the average driver $894 in 2025, thanks to an average of 49 hours spent sitting in traffic,” according to the report. “The U.S. also has ten out of the world’s 25 worst cities for traffic, and 19 of the 25 worst in the Americas.”

It also has the fewest motor vehicle thefts per capita, the lowest incidents due to phone use and the fifth-lowest prevalence of harsh braking. Also, only 11.8% of Vermont drivers are uninsured.
