The town of Avon and the Avon Volunteer Fire Department are mourning the loss of a 35-year veteran described by many as one who was always there for others, no matter what.

Deputy Chief David Theriault died Jan. 15 following a battle with occupational cancer in a line of duty death, the department said in a release Friday. He was 48.

“Deputy Chief Dave Theriault dedicated his entire life to serving this Department and the Town of Avon,” said AVFD Chief Bruce Appell. “From the time he joined, Dave was a constant presence — reliable, selfless, and deeply committed to the people around him. He led by example, cared fiercely for his fellow firefighters, and gave more than most will ever know. Our department has lost a leader, a mentor, and a friend, and our hearts are with Dave’s family during this incredibly difficult time.”

Theriault first joined the department as a fire explorer at 14 years old and went on to be named deputy chief in February of 2025. During his 35 years of service, Theriault served as Fire Explorers advisor, was promoted to Special Operations Captain and served as chairman of the department’s 75th anniversary committee.

Theriault was awarded the Most Calls for Interior Firefighter Award for 2022-23 and Most Training Hours for Support Firefighter for 2024-25, the department said.

“Throughout his career, he was a steady and respected presence within the Department, known for his dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to service,” the release said.

Avon Volunteer Fire Department officers and members said they were privileged to serve with him, calling him a leader and mentor. The department and the community rallied around him and his family while he fought Stage 4 cancer.

“Known for his leadership, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to others, Deputy Chief Theriault had a lasting impact on generations of firefighters and community members. His guidance, steadiness, and care for those around him helped shape the Avon Volunteer Fire Department and the town he served for his entire life.”

Funeral and memorial service arrangements are incomplete.
