Nearly 1,000 Connecticut workers are being laid off over the next year as Macy’s shutters two fulfillment center buildings.

The company gave notice to the state Department of Labor and the mayor of Cheshire, where the facility is located, as required by law under the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act on Jan. 13.

The layoffs of 993 workers will occur in waves beginning March 14 and again April 4,, Aug. 1 and Aug. 29.

The other workers’ job descriptions include supply chain, night operations, talent acquisition, weekend and daytime part-time operations, weekend and daytime fulltime operations and maintenance and asset protection.

A small number of maintenance and asset protection employees will remain on through April 16 to “handle the decommissioning process,” the WARN notice says.

The two buildings comprising the Macy’s Fulfillment Center are at 475 Knotter Drive and 181 West Johnson Ave.

Two additional employees, “who provide services to Bloomingdale’s for Bloomingdale’s Photo Studio … are Bloomingdale’s employees and their termination date is March 14 – March 26.”

All of the employees will be notified about severance and other benefits and potential opportunities to transfer to positions in nearby Macy’s locations. None of the employees have bumping rights and none are protected by a union, according to the notice.

The news coincides with the closure of 66 Macy’s locations across the country as part of the company’s “Bold New Chapter strategy,” which was announced in February 2024.

“This plan is designed to return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth which includes closing approximately 150 underproductive stores over a three-year period while investing in its 350 go-forward Macy’s locations through fiscal 2026,” the company said in a Jan. 9 news release.
