A security guard at an elementary school in Bloomfield was arrested last week on firearm and marijuana charges following an incident in West Hartford.
Savyon Brown, 26, of Bloomfield was charged after a motor vehicle stop on New Park Avenue in the evening hours on Jan. 6, according to the West Hartford Police Department. The vehicle was stopped after police saw that it had dark tinted windows and a dark license plate cover.
Police said the officers who conducted the stop allegedly found a Glock 17 Gen 5 handgun equipped with a “Glock switch” that turns the weapon into a fully automatic firearm. Officers also allegedly found a Smith & Wesson M&P .380 shield, an extended magazine containing 32 rounds and about 146 grams of marijuana inside the vehicle, police said.
Brown was taken into custody on two counts each of illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle and carrying a pistol without a permit and a single count of possession of a high-capacity magazine, illegal possession of an assault weapon, possession with intent to sell, possession of cannabis over five ounces, use of drug paraphernalia, tinted windows and substantially obscured number plate.
At the time of the arrest, Brown worked as a security guard at the Capitol Region Education Council (CREC) Museum Academy in Bloomfield. According to Superintendent of CREC Magnet Schools Dr. Sasha Douglas, he is employed through a contracted security services provider.
“The individual was immediately removed from their assignment by SSC and will not return to any CREC facility,” Douglas said in a statement.
“While the individual was not a CREC employee, we take this matter very seriously,” Douglas said. “We are working with SSC to review protocols and ensure that personnel assigned to our campuses meet the highest standards for safety and conduct.
“At no point was there any known threat to students or staff during the individual’s assignment at Museum Academy,” Douglas continued. “The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority.”
According to court records, Brown is free on a $400,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Hartford Superior Court on Feb. 25. His attorney did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
