A Ledyard man previously convicted of possessing child sexual abuse materials has pleaded guilty to a similar charge in federal court after investigators allegedly found him with more than 18,000 images and 1,400 videos.
Jason Gibson, 45, waived his right to be indicted and pleaded guilty during a hearing on Tuesday in federal court in Hartford, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut.
According to authorities, state probation officers made a routine home visit to Gibson’s residence on March 6, 2024, and allegedly found an unapproved cellphone that contained a dark web application. An analysis of the phone allegedly revealed more than 200 child sex abuse images and videos as well as numerous text messages with links to child pornography on the dark web, officials said.
On April 2, 2025, probation officers made another home visit and seized an external hard drive. The device was later found to allegedly have more than 18,000 images and 1,400 videos depicting child sex abuse on it, federal officials said. Gibson has been detained since that home visit.
Gibson was previously convicted in state court in February 2020 on a possession of child pornography charge, officials said. He was sentenced in that case to 30 months in prison and 10 years of probation.
Gibson was released from custody in January 2021.
In April 2023, Gibson’s probation was revoked for violating the conditions of his release, officials said. He was sentenced at that time to six months in prison and 94 months of probation. According to authorities, he was released from state custody in August 2023.
The possession of child pornography charge he pleaded guilty to carries a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison and a maximum of 20 years, federal officials said. The penalties are enhanced based on his prior history, authorities said.
The sentencing has not yet been scheduled.
