It is just about that time of year: Sunday, Dec. 21 kicks off the 40th eagle-viewing season at the Shepaug Bald Eagle Observatory, according to FirstLight.

The Observatory, owned and operated by FirstLight, has welcomed approximately 175,000 visitors over four decades who come to see America’s national bird in a beautiful winter habitat,” according to the organization.

“Water running through FirstLight’s Shepaug Generating Station keeps the water below the dam from freezing, resulting in one of New England’s largest seasonal concentrations of bald eagles, offering a rare, close-up look at the once-endangered species perching, soaring, and feeding along the river,” FirstLight went on to say.

“The site is a soaring symbol of American wildlife, with many other bird species – including waterfowl, red-tail hawks, sharp-shinned hawks, goshawks, and great blue herons – also commonly spotted.”

A CT entrepreneur with an MBA started with a food truck. Now he’s aiming for a restaurant chain.

The Observatory runs through Sunday, March 15, according to FirstLight. Registration is free but must be done in advance.

The Shepaug Bald Eagle Observatory is located at 2150 River Rd in Southbury, according to Google.
