Providence, R.I. — Federal and local authorities urgently appealed to the public this week after releasing new surveillance images of the person they now believe carried out a deadly mass shooting at Brown University — a tragedy that has left two students dead and nine others wounded and a community searching for answers.
Shortly before 4:05 p.m. on Saturday, December 13, the quiet of the Barus and Holley Engineering and Physics building on the campus of Brown University was shattered when a gunman opened fire during a final exam session in an engineering lecture hall. Within minutes, two students had been killed and nine others injured, some critically.

Investigators say the suspect fled the scene immediately after the attack, escaping on foot through a Hope Street exit. Hours later, authorities released the first images of a person of interest seen in dark clothing and a mask — his face obscured and identity unknown. The footage has since been circulated widely, but still offers no clear view of his features.
In the hours after the shooting, police briefly detained a man in his 20s in a nearby hotel as a possible person of interest. But by late Sunday night, that individual was released and cleared by Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha, who said evidence no longer supported his involvement. The man is no longer considered connected to the shooting, and authorities have renewed their focus on the still-unidentified suspect seen in surveillance clips.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has now stepped up its public appeal, announcing a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the person believed responsible for the attack. FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized that even small clues could help break the case and urged people to examine the newly released photos closely.
Residents and students have been asked to check their own home security cameras, doorbell footage, and other video recordings that might show the suspect’s movements before or after the shooting. More than 400 law enforcement officers from local, state, and federal agencies continue to canvas neighborhoods around Providence in search of leads.
Brown University President Christina Paxson described the incident as “a deeply tragic day” for the campus, mourning the two students identified so far — Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov — whose lives were cut short in what should have been a routine afternoon exam. Classes and finals have been canceled as the campus grapples with the emotional aftermath.
Officials stress the suspect remains armed and dangerous, and urge anyone who recognizes the individual in the images or knows anything about his whereabouts to contact the FBI or local police immediately. Tips can be submitted to the FBI tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI or through local law enforcement agencies.
