Connecticut may see several inches of snow tonight and into Sunday with the southern part of the state expected to get the most snowfall, officials said.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for coastal sections of Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex and New London counties, where up to four inches of snow is possible, according to the National Weather Service. Away from the coastline, one to two inches is forecast and in northern parts of the state, including Litchfield County, only an inch of snow is possible.

The snow will begin mainly after midnight on Sunday and continue into Sunday morning. Temperatures will remain around 24 degrees with ice accumulation possible. Most of the snow will fall before 8 a.m. on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. Throughout the morning on Sunday, conditions will gradually improve, with Sunday afternoon mostly sunny and a high near 29 degrees.

The winter weather advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. Saturday until 1 p.m. Sunday, the National Weather Service said.

“In inland sections of southern Connecticut, snow is forecast to begin closer to midnight with one to two inches of accumulation possible, and in northern Connecticut snow begins after midnight and around one inch of accumulation is forecast,” according to a statement from the National Weather Service.

What makes this storm unusual is that coastal communities in Connecticut are often spared the brunt of winter storm impacts, with mixed conditions including rain and snow most often occurring. Northern parts of the state including Litchfield County often tend to see the biggest snowfall totals. But this storm will see the greatest impacts along the coastline, officials said.

Some snowfall rates of a half inch an hour are possible near the coast, the National Weather Service said.
