People who still refer to the big music amphitheater on Savitt Way in Hartford as The Meadows will now be completely accurate in calling it that again.
The venue has reverted to its original name, The Meadows Music Theatre, after spending nearly 20 years as the Xfinity Theatre, according to a press release on Wednesday.
The change may be temporary. The change is reportedly the result of the expiration of the naming rights deal after nearly 20 years. A spokesman for Live Nation confirmed the official name change and said that a new naming rights deal is being sought. Live Nation will continue to book the venue and no other major changes are currently planned.
The new name is already reflected on the website of Live Nation, the company that books major national acts into the venue. The website has even brought back the original florid logo for The Meadows.
The amphitheater has 7,500 conventional auditorium seats under its pavilion roof but room for over 20,000 people on its spacious enclosed lawn area. That expansive outdoor area makes The Meadows one of the largest amphitheaters in the United States. The region of Hartford in which the venue was built in the mid-1990s has been known as North Meadows since the 17th century.
Artists who have sold out the 30,000 capacity amphitheater over the years include Jimmy Buffett, Dave Matthews Band, Aerosmith, Britney Spears, Spice Girls, Kiss and Morgan Wallen. Farm Aid benefit concerts, with topflight talent from Willie Nelson to Neil Young to Margo Price, were held at the venue in 2018 and 2021.
The amphitheater hasn’t officially been called The Meadows since it became the Comcast Theatre under a naming rights deal with the Comcast corporation in 2006. Under an extension of the same deal, Comcast changed the name of the venue in 2013 to the Xfinity Theatre to reflect the 2010 rebranding of its cable TV service.
