One man arrested after investigators seize illegal marijuana products at CT smoke shop

One man was arrested Wednesday after the alleged discovery of illegal marijuana products at a smoke shop in Norwalk.

The Norwalk Police Department‘s Special Services Division executed a search and seizure warrant Wednesday at Smokey Bear Tobacco and Vape at 43 North Main St. as part of an ongoing investigation into smoke shops suspected of selling cannabis and cannabis products without a valid license, according to police.

During the search, investigators allegedly located and seized “1.405 pounds of illegal marijuana edibles, 0.1375 pounds of THC vape product and 0.54 pounds of marijuana flower,” police said.

According to police, the marijuana was allegedly located in a magnetic hidden compartment near the cash register. “Also located during the search as part of the edibles were 89 seltzer cans containing 25mg of THC, 120 seltzer cans containing 50mg of THC, and three seltzer cans containing 5mg of THC,” police said.

Police also said investigators found $1,714.00 in U.S. currency.

Store employee Islam Altahami, 19, of Norwalk, was taken into custody on charges of illegal sale of marijuana and possession of more than eight ounces of marijuana and for an outstanding arrest warrant on a charge of Illegal sale of marijuana. He was held on bonds totaling $60,000 and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 24.

According to police, the investigation and arrest “mark the second violation of the Norwalk Municipal Ordinance for vape shops by Smokey Bear Tobacco and Vape.”
