WINDSOR – The Windsor High football team will get a shot at redemption.
After last year’s heartbreaking last-second loss in the Class MM championship game, the top-seeded Warriors are back for another chance to win a title, after beating Newington 42-0 in Monday’s Class MM semifinal game.
Windsor (11-1) will play Bunnell, a 21-20 winner over Wilton in the other MM semifinal, either Saturday or Sunday in the championship game at a site to be announced.
Monday’s game was a rematch of last year’s Class MM semifinal, which Windsor won, 50-0.
Windsor’s senior quarterback AJ Robinson, who was named the state Gatorade Player of the Year on Friday and broke the state career passing touchdown record last week, had three touchdowns in the first half – two rushing and one passing – and two in the second half, both passing.
His first TD came on a 5-yard run with 2:06 left in the first quarter. His second came with 11:37 left in the second quarter on an 87-yard pass to Jayden Compton to give Windsor a 14-0 lead.
On Windsor’s next drive, Robinson scored on a 10-yard run to put the Warriors up 21-0.
Newington drove to the Windsor 29 on its next drive but a Josiah Sims pass was picked off by Compton, who ran it to the 50. Windsor got to Newington’s 3-yard line on the ensuing drive but could not find the end zone and led 21-0 at halftime.
Newington picked up a fumble on Windsor’s opening drive and got to the Warriors’ 4 but Windsor’s defense stopped the Nor’easters from scoring.
In the second half, Robinson had another long touchdown pass, this time a 71-yard pass to Charlie Lewis, to give Windsor a 28-0 lead with 7:12 left in the third quarter. And he had another big play, a 53-yard TD pass to Missoni Brown with 6:09 left in the third, to give Windsor a 35-0 lead.
Brown scored on a 52-yard run with 10 minutes left in the game for a 42-0 lead.
Windsor lost to Masuk 24-21 on a last-second field goal in the final last year. The last time the Warriors won a title was 2014.
