Erin Stewart and other Connecticut Republican candidates have a tough decision to make.
Prior to the Trump era, there was a large swath of registered Democrats willing to vote for a socially progressive, fiscally responsible and charismatic Republican candidate.
Then MAGA came and we “pulled the party lever” (remember that fellow Boomers?) where we didn’t necessarily vote for the Democratic candidate, but voted against Trump.
I believe that reasonable Democrats are willing to go back to normal, at least at the state level. I personally am exhausted with the corruption and abuse in our state government and almost Trump-like dismissive behaviour of Ned Lamont. In addition to four of our seven Congressmen, we have a governor who is a septuagenarian. It’s time for us Boomers to turn things over to the next generation.

But, and it’s a big but, Erin and others will have to denounce Trump for his disregard of the Constitution. To not do so means they’re either a MAGA supporter or complicit and willing to compromise their personal morals to get elected. Either of these reasons mean a no vote for me. With that said, do Republican candidates cater to the Trumpers in order to secure the nomination and get trounced in the general election or take the high road and separate themselves from Trump, convincing Republicans that they’re the best bet to win the general election?
The ball’s in your court Erin.
