On December 5, 2025, at approximately 4:17 p.m., officers from the Decatur Police Department responded to a distress call about a gunshot victim at Sportsman Park — located at 3415 E. Lost Bridge Road. On arrival, they discovered an 18‑year-old male suffering from what appeared to be at least one gunshot wound. He was rushed by ambulance to Decatur Memorial Hospital, but sadly was pronounced dead soon after arrival.

Within hours, investigators from the department’s Criminal Investigations Division began gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses at the scene. Based on the evidence and witness statements, they developed probable cause to arrest 23‑year-old Joshua J. Gregg in connection with the shooting. Gregg was located and taken into custody in Shelbyville, Illinois by the Shelbyville Police Department. Detectives traveled there to interview him, then transported him back to Macon County jail. He now faces charges of Involuntary Manslaughter and Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon.

The investigation remains open. Authorities say they are continuing to follow leads and urge anyone with information to contact the Decatur Police Criminal Investigations Division or call Crimestoppers.

Friends and family of the victim, as well as witnesses, are still in shock. According to early reports, the victim was a young man with his whole life ahead of him — described by those who knew him as kind, ambitious and full of potential. The sudden violence has sent ripples of grief through the community, especially among local youths who frequent the park.

Community members who frequent Sportsman Park say the area, once a spot for weekend baseball games and family outings, now feels tinged with fear. One neighbor, asking not to be named, said, “We bring our kids here to play — we never thought something like this could happen.”

Back at the scene, investigators found shell casings and other forensic clues that they believe will help reconstruct what happened. Detectives continue to canvas the park and surrounding neighborhood, hoping additional witnesses will step forward. Police say they believe this was not a random act, but are still trying to determine whether the shooting was targeted, spontaneous, or a result of a confrontation.

As the community mourns, authorities reiterate that any piece of information — even seemingly small — could be crucial to building a full account of the night’s events. For now, the face of the victim remains unpublicized; investigators are focusing on gathering facts and ensuring justice through the legal process.
