Maryland scored two first-half goals and the fourth-ranked Terrapins shut out No. 13 UConn 3-0 in an NCAA tournament Round of 16 game at College Park, Md., on Saturday.
Albi Ndrenika opened the scoring at 26:23 of the opening half. Rocket Ritarita, who assisted on the Ndrenika goal, then added one of his own at 37:32. Maryland outshot the Huskies 11-1 in the first half, 23-5 for the game. The Terps put eight shots on goal to the Huskies’ three. Luke Van Heukelum closed out the scoring for the Terps (13-1-4) late in the second half.
Laurin Mack posted the clean sheet in goal for Maryland with three saves. UConn’s Kyle Durham had five saves.
UConn (12-5-4) was making its first appearance in the tournament since 2018.
Women’s hockey
Late Friday, UConn wins top-10 matchup: UConn’s Megan Woodworth scored the game-winning goal at 16:35 of the third period to lift the No. 8-ranked UConn women’s hockey team to a 4-3 win over No. 9 Quinnipiac in the opening game of the Nutmeg Classic at Toscano Family Ice Forum on Friday night.
The Huskies (11-3-1) played Yale, a 5-0 winner over Sacred Heart in Friday’s second game, in Saturday night’s championship.
Ashley Allard has two goals for UConn while Kyla Josifovic added a goal and an assist. Huskies goalie Tia Chan had 40 saves. Zoe Uens had a goal and an assist for the Bobcats, while Aynsley D’Ottavio had two assists and Makayla Watson a goal that tied the game at 3-3 at 11:03 of the third setting the stage for Woodworth’s winner.
