A woman was sentenced to 4½ years in prison for stealing over $140,000 from a man she lived with in Clinton before fleeing to Rhode Island.
Pocahontas Cooley, 62, of Rhode Island, was sentenced on Monday by Judge Laura F. Baldini to 13 years in prison, execution suspended after 4½ years served, with five years of probation, according to a release from the Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice.
Cooley was found guilty after a court trial of two counts of first-degree larceny and one count of second-degree larceny, the DCJ said.
According to court records, from December 2021 through January 2022, Cooley reportedly stole more than $143,000 from a man she was living with in Clinton then fled to Rhode Island. “Most of the stolen money was money the man had inherited upon his father’s death,” the DCJ said.
Michael A. Gailor, state’s attorney for the Middlesex Judicial District, praised the work of the Clinton Police Department and extended “his gratitude to Citizen’s Bank and TD Bank North,” according to the release.
