Two juveniles were arrested after police responded to multiple calls reporting attempted car break-ins in Southington early Monday morning.

The Southington Police Department received several calls from residents in the area of Flanders Road around 3:41 a.m. on Monday reporting individuals allegedly attempting to break into parked vehicles in residential driveways, according to police.

Arriving officers allegedly observed two suspicious vehicles that appeared to be traveling together. One of the vehicles, a silver Hyundai Sonata, had no registration plates in the front or rear of the vehicle. The driver, who police said was wearing a black ski mask, allegedly turned off the vehicle’s lights and began to drive in a reckless manner in an apparent effort to elude Officers, police said.

Officers reportedly deployed pursuit prevention devices on one of the vehicles before it fled, “ultimately rendering the vehicle inoperable,” according to police.

The unoccupied vehicle was located a short distance away in a nearby neighborhood, police said. Officers noted damage to the
steering column. After speaking with the vehicle’s owner, the vehicle was determined to be stolen out of Hartford, according to police.

A perimeter was established in the area, and a K-9 track was conducted to locate the vehicle’s occupants. A ride share vehicle was stopped in the area, and two juvenile passengers were detained, police said.

According to police, clothing worn by the juveniles matched home security footage which captured a vehicle burglary.

The two juveniles were identified as a 15-year-old and 17-year-old, both from Hartford. The two juveniles were transported to Southington police headquarters.

The 15-year-old was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, second-degree larceny, first-degree criminal trover, conspiracy to commit third-degree burglary, interfering with an officer, reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle without a license and failure to have headlamps illuminated.

The 17-year old was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, second-degree larceny, first-degree criminal trover, third-degree burglary and interfering with an officer.

The two juveniles were released to legal guardians and are scheduled to appear at Hartford Juvenile Court on Tuesday.

“Investigation with this matter is ongoing with respect to additional victims who reported their vehicles entered and property stolen later in the morning, and with regards to the second involved suspicious motor vehicle,” police said.
