One person was arrested after police said he was the “aggressor” in an altercation outside a Walmart in Newington where a fight led to a gunshot being fired.
Officers responded to the store at 3164 Berlin Turnpike on Sunday on the report of a physical altercation in the parking lot, according to the Newington Police Department. While officers were en route, they learned that one person who was involved had a firearm and someone had suffered an injury, police said.
Investigators found that 26-year-old Rashawn Harris of Westminster, Maryland, allegedly approached a vehicle as the driver was trying to back into a parking space and confronted the driver, police said. The driver then got out before two allegedly started arguing, which boiled over into a physical fight, according to police.
Police identified the driver of the vehicle as the individual who had a gun and said they had a valid pistol permit. During the incident, the individual allegedly drew the gun and one shot was fired, but it did not hit anyone, police said.
Both the driver and Harris were injured in the fight, according to police.
Harris was allegedly identified as the aggressor and was charged with second-degree breach of peace, police said. He was held on a $5,000 bond and was expected to face a judge on Monday.
Police said the second individual who was involved has been cooperative.
The investigation remains ongoing.
