A motorcyclist was critically injured during a crash with a motor vehicle in Bridgeport on Sunday.

Patrol officers were dispatched to the area of Main Street and Goldenrod Avenue around 11 a.m. on Sunday on the report of a motor vehicle crash involving a four-door sedan and motorcycle, according to Capt. Kevin Gilleran of the Bridgeport Police Department.

Medics and Bridgeport firefighters quickly responded to the crash scene and rendered medical aid to the motorcycle operator. The operator, a 35-year-old woman from Bridgeport, was transported to a nearby hospital where she was listed in critical but stable condition, Gilleran said.

Arriving officers arrived at the scene and found the motorcycle positioned in the southbound lane of Main Street near the intersection with Goldenrod Avenue, according to Gilleran.

The operator of the sedan, later identified as a 75-year-old Bridgeport resident, remained at the scene and was cooperating with police. He was uninjured, Gilleran said.

The Bridgeport Police Department’s Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene. According to Gilleran, the preliminary investigation indicated that the motorcycle was traveling southbound on Main Street when the sedan, which was traveling northbound on Main Street, turned left onto Goldenrod Avenue colliding with the motorcycle.

“The Bridgeport Police Traffic Division reminds all riders that motorcycles, including smaller engine models (50cc and up), are fully regulated motor vehicles in Connecticut and must be operated only on the roadway in full compliance with state traffic laws,” Gilleran said.

“Riders should also wear a properly worn and securely fastened DOT-approved helmet and exercise heightened caution, as even low-speed crashes can result in severe head injuries,” Gilleran added.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Officer Eroildo Quiles of the Bridgeport Police Department’s Traffic Division at 203-576-7640.
