Rock on this week in CT arts with Black Sabbath tribute, political rock advocate and British legend

This is a week of twists and turns on Connecticut stages. We’ve got Jeremy Jordan, the Broadway star of “Newsies” and “The Great Gatsby,” fronting a rock band at The Webster. Another Broadway star, Mandy Patinkin, is bringing a solo act called “Jukebox” to Westport Country Playhouse and two former stars of the musical “Wicked” joining forces for a concert at Garde Arts Center.

The Ivoryton Playhouse, which usually puts plays and musicals on its subscription season, offers a more concert-style event as its holiday show this year. The homegrown “Playhouse Holiday Jamboree” is written and performed by names you’ll recognize from previous Ivoryton shows.

Ozzy Osbourne‘s longtime lead guitarist Zakk Wylde is on tour in a tribute to Black Sabbath, the band Osbourne led before his lengthy solo career.

Political rock firebrand Tom Morello played Connecticut with his best-known band Rage Against the Machine in the 1990s, with Audioslave and Street Sweeper Social Club in the 2000s and with Prophets of Rage in 2016. He returns now with a “Tom Morello & Friends” show.

This week is also the start of “Last Waltz” season, when musicians gather to pay tribute the all-star multi-band concert marking the end (for a time) of The Band. The event was captured for posterity by Martin Scorsese in an acclaimed music documentary that provides a template for these recreations. One of the busiest and longest serving tribute bands, The The Band Band, has four “Last Waltz” gigs between now and the end of the month, two of them in Connecticut. Stay tuned for a different “Last Waltz” next week.
