Police have arrested a man on a DUI charge after he allegedly crossed over center lines and struck a parked police cruiser with a K-9 inside in New Haven on Tuesday.

The collision occurred in the 400 block of Orchard St. at 5:11 p.m. when 62-year-old Barry Evans of West Haven was headed north and crossed over the double yellow center line, according to Officer Christian Bruckhart of the New Haven Police Department.

Evans struck a cruiser parked on the southbound side of the road where police were responding to an unrelated call, Bruckhart said. No officers were in the cruiser, but a K-9 that was inside did not appear to be injured, according to Bruckhart.

Evans was taken into custody following a brief struggle, Bruckhart said. He allegedly admitted to drinking for several hours prior to the crash, according to Bruckhart. Police allegedly found several empty and partially full alcohol containers in Evans’ vehicle, Bruckhart said.

Evans was charged with operating under the influence, drinking while operating a motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle while under suspension, failure to maintain the proper lane, insufficient insurance and interfering with an officer. He was held on a $10,000 bond pending an arraignment hearing.
