A person was killed when they pulled over in Newtown on Thursday and the commercial vehicle they were driving began rolling and ran them over, police said.

Emergency crews responded to Hawleyville Road near Old Hawleyville Road at 6:16 p.m. on the report of a motor vehicle versus pedestrian accident and found the victim lying in the northbound shoulder of the road, according to Lt. Scott P. Smith of the Newtown Police Department.

Smith said bystanders were already performing life-saving measures on the victim when first responders arrived. The victim was later pronounced dead at the scene. Their identity has not been released.

The police department’s Detective Division and Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene to investigate. According to Smith, investigators believe the victim was alone and was driving a commercial vehicle north on Hawleyville Road when they stopped and got out.

Smith said the vehicle then began rolling forward and struck the victim as they were in the shoulder of the road. The vehicle was found after it came to a stop near the Exit 9 commuter lot.

“At this time, there is no reason to believe any other vehicles were involved in this accident,” Smith said in a statement.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information has been asked to contact the Newtown Police Department at 203-426-5841.
