Two barges washed up on the shores of Connecticut on Thursday amid strong winds and rough seas felt from Hurricane Melissa.
The barges were spotted in the afternoon hours partially beached at Woodmont Beach in Milford, according the Milford Fire Department.
Fire officials shared videos of the loose barges on the department’s Facebook page. The first video was posted shortly before 5 p.m. Nearly an hour later, the department shared another video saying a second barge washed up onto the beach. The barges appeared to be several hundred yards away from one another.
Fire officials said the U.S. Coast Guard was made aware of the situation and was concocting a plan to salvage both barges, which appeared to have come loose from their moors before washing up.
According to fire officials, strong winds and rough seas were expected to continue throughout the night.
A spokesperson for the Coast Guard did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
