Police are investigating an incident involving a high school student who was allegedly found in possession of what appeared to be firearms in Stonington on Thursday.
Officers responded to Stonington High School Thursday after receiving a report of a student in possession of a firearm, according to Deputy Chief Todd Olson of the Stonington Police Department.
The school was placed on lockdown as a precaution during the investigation.
“During that time, two classrooms made the decision to evacuate and relocate to alternate facilities, as provided for in their annual safety training,” Olson said.
Following the initial investigation, a student was taken into custody after two weapons later determined to be facsimile pellet guns were allegedly located in a backpack, according to Olson.
After it was determined there was no ongoing threat, the lockdown was lifted and students were released for the day, Olson said. An extensive sweep of the building was conducted, and no additional firearms were discovered, according to Olson.
“The Stonington school administration and staff did an outstanding job ensuring the safety of students and working seamlessly with law enforcement to manage the situation efficiently and keep parents updated,” Olson said. “The department would also like to acknowledge and commend the students and staff members who promptly reported the incident.”
The Stonington Police Department was assisted by Groton, Groton City and Ledyard Police Departments, Connecticut State Police Troop E and F and the Westerly Police Department.
The incident remains under investigation, according to Olson.
